Welcome to the Lafourche Parish Game and Fish Commission Web Site. The Commission manages and governs the Lake Fields/Lake Long Game and Fish Preserve, which includes Lake Fields, Lake Long, and surrounding property up to their historic high water meander lines of 1857 minus any property sold or transferred by the State of Louisiana.

Goals and/or activities of the Commission center around:
  • camp lease management
  • harvest permits (alligators, nutria, etc.)
  • improving water quality and habitat
  • increasing fish and wildlife populations
  • enhancing the recreational and tourism potential of the Preserve

CAMP CANAL DREDGING

The North Lafourche Levee District, in cooperation with the Lafourche Parish Game and Fish Commission, is starting their mitigation project in Lake Fields and lower Bayou Folse (Camp Canal). This project will build marsh along the Lake Fields and Camp Canal shorelines to fulfill the mitigation requirements for dredging marsh habitats in Company Canal east of the Bayou Lafourche. The Commission is contributing financial assets to the project, but the total cost of the project is largely funded by the Levee District.

One issue that has been relayed to us from camp owners concerns spoil placement and potential movement of the spoil back into the dredged channel. A very thorough engineering design study was completed and the project is proceeding along the developed guidelines. The main channel is being dredged to a depth of eight feet (which is more than the Commission envisioned) to allow for some sloughing of the spoil back into the channel. The Levee District must build narrow terraces to create habitat in order to meet their mitigation credit requirements. There will be a second lift over the terraces. Because of camps, power lines, trees, etc. it is not possible to place all the excess (that not used for terraces) spoil on the shoreline where it cannot slide back into the channel. We anticipate that benefits will accrue with the present project design.
